Health and Fitness Using Technology: Connecting the Dots

If you are reading this article, it’s safe to say that you are pretty tech-savvy. In this day and age, being familiar with modern technology and its wide range of applications is no longer reserved for young tech nerds or software engineers.

Seeing as technology has permeated just about every pore of life, it is a necessity to possess some level of knowledge related to it. And we’re not just talking about having accounts on various social networks, which are dime a dozen nowadays, or activities such as blogging because those are a bit obvious.

We’re going to take a look at an example where modern technology has found its application and it’s one of the last places you would expect to find it.

Let’s say you were interested in working out. Losing and weight and getting in shape, despite what anyone says, is not very complicated but it does take a lot of effort on your part if you want to see some results. Now, there are just about a million ways you can do that. Playing sports, running, cycling, climbing, skiing, swimming, lifting weights, you name it.

You can also enjoy the benefits of working out in our own home with home gym equipment such as an elliptical trainer, a rowing machine, a treadmill, or a stationary bike. But, you might also ask: “What does modern technology have to do with it? Where does it fit in?”

High Tech Exercise at Home

To see what I’m driving at we will look at elliptical exercise machines – if you visit that website you will find a lot of information on how hi-tech fits into all of that. A lot of home exercise machines, elliptical trainers especially, have state-of-the-art consoles with LCD panels and heart rate monitors. Heart rate monitors built into the handlebars of the trainer measure your heart rate, which is then fed into the console and the data is shown on the LCD.elliptical trainer technology

Each of these machines has a number of pre-set workout programs which can be customized to the needs of the user. The machine will also tell you, based on your heart rate, when you are in the fat-burning zone so that you can adjust the parameters in order to achieve maximum results. It’s a clever implementation of modern technology which makes working out much more efficient, and even easier, because you will perform it more efficiently.

After a while, you may become bored with working out and will consider dropping it altogether if it doesn’t produce the results you expected, provided that they’re realistic of course. But, with an elliptical trainer you don’t have to worry about it because you will achieve the desired results much quicker, since the machine makes sure every single movement you make is done properly, with good form and posture. You can’t cheat, even if you want to.

Clever use of technology has helped these machines to be interesting as well – with variation of workouts and even things like built in speaker or iPad docks. Exercising at home doesn’t need to be boring, you can combine it with other entertainment such as listening to music or audio books and the great thing is that you will continue to work out for longer.

There may come a day when technology will be so advanced, you won’t even have to work out but for now it represents a useful tool in making it happen. It doesn’t do it for you, but it helps, nonetheless.
